ESTIDAMA Center

Vision

is to provide a forum for the exchange of information between researchers, developers and practitioners acting on the topic of building energy and environment and related issues. ESTIDAMA aims but not limited to the following:

ESTIDAMA Center is already having and will work on enlarging its relations that can transfer and exchange knowledge and technical views to be applied in real practice of constructing a sustainable built environment in Egypt and the region along with being in touch with the recent news, conferences and workshops, technologies, tools, and literature in the field as much as possible.

ESTIDAMA has a very well qualified team of architects, planners, urban designers, environmentalists and professionals who are knowledgeable and experts in the related fields of sustainable built environment. The team dream is to achieve quality of life and the total comfort for the users on both scales of our built environment; building and urban.

Advance and promote the science of building energy and environmental efficiency and building performance simulation in order to improve the design, construction, operation, maintenance and deconstruction of new / existing buildings.

Identify problems within the built environment that may be solved by improved simulation tools and techniques.

ESTIDAMA Clustered Urban Neighborhood

Since the first generation of satellite cities around Cairo in mid-1970s, urban development in Egypt has sprawled from the distinguished compact arid built environment, whereas the court-yarded housing typologies that were completing the vernacular picture of desert architecture have been discarded early 20th century. This motivated ESTIDAMA towards micro-climate based urban design in Egypt, especially after New Cairo Suburban development flourished by the new millennium. The main objective was initially to alleviate outdoor conditions for pedestrian as a quality of life and well-being goals because those new suburban development were all dot patterns although they were not all single-family housing.  Nevertheless, the application of climatology research is connected by ESTIDAMA team to the process of urban design and planning of neighborhoods because certain micro-climatic conditions conclude  certain housing and population requirements. Based on this, our team have started to consider assessing different existing patterns for the sake of urban design practice that fulfills both acceptable urban forms and housing typologies in the 21st century. Moreover, we have developed our own design process to couple the evaluation of urban geometry in term of the outdoor and indoor thermal performance, and its impact on the energy efficiency for buildings. The later mixture concluded clustered urban forms based on medium population housing typologies. ESTIDAMA establishes its process based on the impact of urban form, mitigation and adaptation strategies on both the outdoor thermal performance and indoor environmental quality in the context of Egyptian city planning. ESTIDAMA urban design process formulates what we call the sustainable housing typologies of the 5th generation of Egyptian cities.

One of our major aims is improve R&D methodologies for the sustainable design undertaken by the whole community’s architects, urban planners and urban designers in applying the passive design and urban planning strategies to reduce building and urban fabric energy consumption, reaching acceptable human comfort levels, reducing GHG emissions and to increase the quality of the design process and its product.

The vision of ESTIDAMA Network is to develop and implement a strategy to effectively transfer the knowledge and technologies developed to architects, engineers, builders, manufactures and utilities in Egypt. Our Network will lead  the development of a knowledge base and that support optimized building and urban design. It will play a key role in providing a pool of experts and support the research and development.

As the vision of ESTIDAMA Network is to develop and implement a strategy to effectively transfer the knowledge and technologies developed to architects, engineers, builders, manufactures and utilities in Egypt, Estidama team is already leading a large network in Egypt. This network includes both academics and practitioners to lead the development of a knowledge base and support optimized building-urban design community.

Among the ESTIDAMA network is IBPSA-Egypt which has organized its latest very well known research conference BSCairo2019 and has been published by IOP publishing.
